The Death Adder ranks in at number 9 out of the top 10 most venomous snakes. It is a true ambush predator. While it sits in amongst the leaf litter or sand, the tail will be above its camouflaged setting, luring the prey towards it. At incredible speed, this reptile strikes faster than any other Australian snake and certainly would have to be one of the world's fastest striking snakes.

The venom of the Death Adder causes mainly paralysis to its prey and is injected with fangs approximately 6mm in length. There are four described species of Death Adders found throughout Australia, Tasmania being the only place where they are not found.
